Dr Ömer Aykut Sümer is a GMC-registered doctor who performs hair transplant procedures in both London and Istanbul. He specialises in FUE and DHI hair transplantation and has built his practice around a doctor-led approach, with a strong emphasis on careful planning, natural results and long-term patient care.
Why I Chose to Work With Dr Sümer
I first met Dr Sümer in Istanbul, where I spent two full days filming in his clinic, recording an in-depth podcast and observing surgery from start to finish.
What impressed me most was how involved he is throughout the entire patient journey.
Every patient enquiry and submitted photograph is personally reviewed by Dr Sümer before any recommendations are made. Rather than relying on sales consultants, he conducts every consultation himself, taking time to understand each patient's concerns, goals and expectations before discussing whether surgery is the right option.
Dr Sümer is also a strong believer in combining hair transplantation with medical therapy where appropriate. He places a high value on treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil to help preserve existing hair and improve long-term outcomes. However, he recognises that medication is a personal choice and works with each patient to decide what is most appropriate for their individual circumstances.
As someone who has lived with hair loss for over 30 years and undergone eight hair transplant procedures myself, I appreciate this balanced, honest and patient-focused approach.
What Stood Out During My Visit
During my time at the clinic I was able to observe an 11-hour hair transplant procedure from beginning to end.
This gave me the opportunity to watch every stage of the process, from hairline design and donor extraction through to graft placement and the completion of the procedure.
Several things stood out.
- Every consultation is carried out personally by Dr Sümer.
- Every patient submission and set of photographs is reviewed by Dr Sümer himself before treatment recommendations are made.
- Dr Sümer personally performs the extractions and places every graft himself using the DHI technique.
- Hairline design is carefully planned with each patient rather than following a standard template.
- Very small punches and sharp DHI implanter pens are used with the aim of minimising trauma to both the donor and recipient areas while achieving excellent density.
- Dr Sümer personally manages his patients' aftercare following surgery.
The clinic also had a genuinely friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It was clear that Dr Sümer has built an experienced and supportive team around him.
His patient coordinator, Emel, was excellent throughout my visit. She ensures patients are looked after from the moment they book, organising hotel accommodation, airport transfers and helping guide them through every stage of their visit, allowing the process to run smoothly from arrival through to departure.
Why I Rate His Approach
One of the reasons I enjoy working with Dr Sümer is that our views on hair restoration are very similar.
Neither of us believes that a successful hair transplant is simply about transplanting the highest number of grafts possible.
Instead, the emphasis is on careful planning, preserving the donor area, creating natural hairlines and producing results that will continue to look appropriate many years into the future.
What also impressed me was the level of doctor involvement offered at the clinic. In a city such as Istanbul, where many clinics delegate much of the surgery to technicians, Dr Sümer remains personally responsible for consultations, planning, extraction, graft placement and aftercare.
Considering that level of personal involvement, I believe the clinic offers excellent value for patients seeking a genuinely doctor-led procedure.

My Thoughts
I've been fortunate to spend time with many respected hair transplant surgeons over the past 15 years, and every doctor has their own strengths.
What stood out to me about Dr Sümer was his commitment to remaining personally involved throughout the patient's entire journey.
From reviewing photographs and carrying out consultations himself, through to designing the hairline, performing the extraction, placing every graft and providing the aftercare, patients deal directly with the surgeon at every important stage.
That level of continuity is becoming increasingly uncommon, particularly in Istanbul.
